Clinical Nutrition

By definition, clinical nutrition is the science of nutrients and how they are digested, absorbed, transported, metabolized, stored, and eliminated by the body.  In practice, at Core Naturopathics, we see it as the "nitty-gritty" of the nutrition world.  While it is imperative that a healthy diet be in place for good health, there is a role for nutrient supplementation.  Whether due to years or decades of poor diet (yourself or your parents/grandparents), poor soil quality leading to nutrient depletion, poorly grown foods, chemical exposure, pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness, injury, or disease, nutrient depletions resulting from pharmaceutical medication use, or misguided nutrient supplementation leading to imbalances, sometimes macro (protein/fat/carbohydrates) and/or micro (vitamins/minerals), nutrients become unbalanced.  These imbalances (excesses or deficiencies) can be so deep-rooted and severe that it is virtually impossible to correct them through diet alone.  This is where nutrient supplementation comes in.  It can truly yield miraculous results if the recommendations come from someone extremely skilled and knowledgeable in clinical nutrition and all of the interactions that occur among all nutrients.  It goes far beyond simply taking a multivitamin.

What would this treatment look like for me?

All of our naturopathic doctors are extensively trained in clinical nutrition and through a thorough health investigation, they can often discern what nutrients may be lacking or in excess in your diet and can recommend an intelligent and individualized nutrient rebalancing protocol specifically designed to address your unique nutritional picture.  Laboratory tests are often highly beneficial in further investigating nutritional imbalances, and our practitioners frequently recommend them in order to get the whole picture.

Recommendations are typically made for a specified period of time, after which a re-assessment (verbal and/or laboratory) would be done.  Specifics such as dosage amount and frequency, as well as the optimal form of each nutrient are always outlined in detail.  Our clinic only recommends vitamin and mineral supplements that are of the best in quality, with best absorbed and utilized forms of each nutrient, best dosage amounts, and have no binders, fillers, or chemicals added.

With nutrient supplementation, the goal is never to be on a certain nutrient indefinitely.  In fact, that could actually be detrimental long-term for your health!  The goal is to rebalance and then all attempts are made to maintain with diet alone, continuing supplementation only when required.  That is why regular follow-up visits and retesting are so vitally important for anyone supplementing vitamins or minerals.  They can have miraculous effects, but they can also cause harm and that is unfortunately something that we see time and time again in clients who have self-treated or seen ill-informed practitioners instead of having the guidance of a trained and experienced health care professional.
